One hundred and nine Walworth County youth, grades 3-13, participated in this year’s residential 4-H Camp at Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center in the Wisconsin Dells July 7-10. The three-day, three-night adventure followed the theme, “Around the World,” and was conducted in partnership between 4-H Youth Director Cole Radtke, Lake Geneva, Walworth County 4-H Staff, and the professional staff at Upham Woods.
Throughout the camp, 4-Hers enjoyed a variety of traditional camp activities led by 4-H teens and Upham Woods naturalists. Activities included: arts and crafts, a techno treasure hunt, skits and songs, recreation, and swimming and water games.
Camp nights featured special programs planned by the 4-H counselors and included opening and closing campfires, land games, a “Movie Under the Stars,” Counselor Hunt, dance, and a “Skits & Songs Spectacular.” 4-Hers in grades 7-8 had the added opportunity of traveling to Devil’s Lake State Park to kayak, swim, and rock climb. Younger campers enjoyed paddling the camp barge to Blackhawk Island (adjacent to camp) to explore the Serpentine and Upham Caves.
The 2013 4-H Camp Counselor Team included 18 guys and girls, ages 15-18, who engaged in many hours of pre-camp training before getting to camp. Counselors served in one of two roles: cabin counselors and resource counselors (those who taught daily activities).
