The Elkhorn Area High School girls tennis team won its second Southern Lakes Conference meet Sept. 11 in a 4-3 victory against Westosha Central at home.

The Elks’ Rachel White scored her first conference victory of the season and defeated Brienna Bostanche 7-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles Haley Blum beat Kallie Shramek 6-2, 7-5 and Elkhorn’s Katrina Weber beat Anna Finnemore 7-5 in the second set before losing 6-0 in the second set and rebounding for a 6-5 win in the third set.

The Elks won two of three doubles matches against the Falcons.

“The last match to leave the court was out No. 1 doubles, going to three sets and winning 6-3 to put the finishing touches on a very successful evening,” coach Donna Neshek said.

At No. 1 doubles, Margaret Koss and Alanna Welsh lost 7-5 in the first set before defeating Colleen Anderson and Francesca Przlomki 6-4, 6-3 for the victory.

Sam Price and Erika Sesing beat Lili Teister and Maria Salerno 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

“We are improving weekly and like I try to remind the girls, it’s not how you start but how you finish.” Neshek said.

On Sept. 10, the Elks dropped a SLC match 5-2 against Burlington at home. Price and Sessing won at No. 3 doubles and Kat Weber, playing at No. 3 singles, won her first match of the season.

“Kat Weber played with the mental toughness that I have been trying to impress upon the whole team,” Neshek said. “No. 3 doubles won again. They are having a good season.”

The Elks were scheduled to play Waterford Monday in a SLC meet at home and play today and Saturday in the SLC meet, which is being hosted by Lake Geneva Badger High School.
