The Whitewater girls soccer team needed to play defense a little bit longer to earn its second victory of the season in a nonconference home match against Delavan-Darien, but came up a little short.

With the Whippets leading 1-0 late in the April 10 contest, time wasn’t necessarily on the side of Delavan-Darien, but that didn’t deter the Comets. They went into attack mode to tie the match.

“It’s a very young defense,” Whitewater coach Dan McCrea said of his team. “They played well. We changed our formation a little bit in the second half. We got a little more defensive-oriented. A few cold nights, we got tired the last few minutes of this game.”

The Comets tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by junior forward Beatriz Garnica with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.

“Delavan is a tough team. They scored on that set play,” McCrea said.

The Whippets struck first in the 30th minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jenna Prah as she beat a Delavan-Darien defender one-on-one and kicked the ball in the right corner to give the home team a 1-0 advantage, which was the halftime score.

“I just saw the goal (in front of me),” Prah said. “I was nervous. I didn’t know what to do. So I just put the ball around (the defender) and I shot with my left foot without thinking.”
