Whippet boys move on

Whitewater’s James Dedrick had seven points, including a three-point play, late in Tuesday’s game against Kenosha St. Joseph’s that padded the Whippets’ lead. However, it was defensive play that stood out. Assistant coach Steven Shears said Dedrick is a guy who doesn’t show in the box score a lot, but “had another big game defensively” in Whitewater’s first-round playoff win. (Bob Mischka photo)

The Whitewater boys basketball season will continue following a win at home against Kenosha St. Joseph’s on Tuesday night.
Whitewater, the no. 8 seed in the Division 3 Regional first round, took on the ninth-seeded Lancers and did just enough to survive.
The Whippets ran off to an 8-2 lead early in the first half. St. Joseph junior guard Timothy Berry scored eight of the Lancers’ next 11 points to tie the game at 13-13.
Whitewater senior forward Daniel Fuller had the hot hand in the first half as his offense carried the team most of the half. He scored 16 first half points, which included four three-pointers, before picking up his second foul at the 7-minute and 15-second mark of the first half.
“That was just a result of (senior guard) Roberto (Navejas) finding the open man,” Fuller said. “He’s a baller. He knows how to (break down the defense). He knows how to get people open. All props go to him there.”
The largest Whitewater lead in the first half was seven points (33-26). St. Joseph’s mounted a comeback late in the first half and went on a 7-2 run to trail at the half 35-33.
