After starting its week with a loss, the Whippets tennis team rebounded to come up with a win in a closely-contested match with Edgerton.
The deciding team win came down to the match at No. 2 doubles. Whitewater won the first set and fell behind in the second set before winning the tiebreaker.
“Overall, we continue to make strides, but there are areas that are not coming along as well as I would like,” Whitewater coach Jeff Nelson said. “The big difference was the play of (sophomore) Cassidy Lane. She was beaten by (Edgerton’s) Madison Lien in straight sets (at the Edgerton Quad). She returned the favor by playing one of her most consistent and smartest matches of the year.”
The No. 1 doubles team lost in straight sets but Nelson said Maggie Hough and Hailey Lohmeier didn’t give up, despite coming up short. He also said the Whippets will work on covering up the weak areas while continuing to improve match by match.
The final score was 4-3.
Rematch vs. East Troy
In a rematch against East Troy at home, Sept. 14, Whitewater played another close contest, but coming up on the opposite end of the score.
“We continue to make strides in our game,” Nelson said. “I was pleased with much of what I saw. Sydney was a little inconsistent, but she put it together when she needed to. Her first set was some of her best tennis of the season as she had lost to (East Troy’s) Jessica (Tess) the first time they faced each other. She was a little complacent in the second set and it cost her. It is very difficult to then turn it back on a tie-breaker third set but she was able to do that.”
“The best match of the night came from Hannah at No. 2 singles. She had a very rough night (against Edgerton) but really turned it around and played one of her best matches of the season (against East Troy).”
East Troy’s 4-3 win against Whitewater gave the Trojans a season sweep over the Whippets. East Troy beat the Whippets 5-2 earlier this season.
Whippets make up game vs. Jefferson
Jefferson hosted Whitewater on Sept. 11 to start the Whippets’ week in a match that was rescheduled from an Aug. 28 rainout.
“Overall, I was pleased with how we played (that Monday evening),” Whitewater coach Jeff Nelson said. “Jefferson was one of my picks to take the conference title this year. The girls really showed improvement. We did a nice job of working on some things that will make us better down the road.”
The sophomore duo of Odessa Sonn and Sophie Olson picked up a win at No. 2 doubles. Senior Abby Gnatzig and junior Marissa Mueller won at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles beat the Whippets, 5-2.
A home match against Big Foot/Williams Bay Sept 18 will conclude the conference dual meet season.
