Despite coming up short as a team at a meet at Big Foot, the Whippets boys tennis team was able to overcome Big Foot’s home-court advantage and was victorious in two matches.
In singles, the Whippets No. 1 player Dineth Gunawardena won one of the two matches for the team with his 6-1, 7-5 victory.
The other win for Whitewater came in No. 2 doubles, as the duo of Cole Kinson and Jimmy King won their respective match, 6-4, 6-2.
Big Foot won the April 20 meet 5-2.
Following the Big Foot match, the Whippets had two more meets this past week, as on April 24, the team hosted Edgerton and on April 25, hosted New Berlin West. Despite having its own home-court advantage to play with, the team came up short in both, losing, 4-3 and 4-3, respectively.
However, head coach Jordan Dittmer is looking at the positives from the week.
“I am happy with the way the top of our lineup has been playing,” Dittmer said. “Our No. 1 doubles has looked sharp as well as our No. 2 singles. Our top singles, Dineth, has played very well over the last two days even though he got beat pretty good against New Berlin West.
“I am hoping this lineup will start to produce more wins as the players get more comfortable in their new roles and with their new partners.”
In the meets against Edgerton and New Berlin West, Kinson won both of his No. 2 singles matches, while the No. 1 doubles team of Justin Brantmeier and Mitchell Dalzin also went 2-0.
On April 28, the Whippets will compete in a triangular meet at Madison La Follette High School and then one day later; will participate in a quadrangular at Edgerton High School. Following those meets, the team will then be back at home for a 4:30 p.m. meet on May 1 against McFarland.
