The Whippets’ struggles continued last week as the team only managed one first down in their 39-6 loss at home to Edgerton Friday night. It was also parents night at the game at Whitewater High School.

“They just had the ball bouncing their way,” head coach Tom Grosinske said. “It’s just one of those games that is hard to define and explain.”

For Whippets offense things were tough; quarterback Daniel Fuller went 3-for-15 for 20 yards and one interception in the loss. Jimmy DuVal was the leading receiver for Whitewater with two catches for 17 yards.

Ernie Magana was the leading rusher for Whitewater with eight carries for 18 yards. On defense, Magana was the leading tackler with 10 and had the only score for the Whippets Friday night.

“We weren’t able to get any type of momentum going,” Grosinske said. “When you are always playing from behind or playing catch up you are never going to be on the right side of the scoreboard.”

Edgerton was first on the board as quarterback Jayden Johnson completed a 13 yard touchdown pass to Zach Reiman.          On the Whippets ensuing possession, they would have a punt blocked as Johnson would run one in from three yards out to make it 13-0 four plays later.

Edgerton once again found the scoreboard again as Johnson found Reiman again on a 30 yard pass play to make it 20-0. After another Whippets punt, kicker Zach Reiman would kick a 27 yard field goal to make it 23-0.

On the next possession, Edgerton would block yet another Whitewater punt. It took all but one play as Johnson would run it in from three yards out to make it 30-0. After a fumble recovery by Edgerton, they’d score again as Johnson completed an 18 yard touchdown pass to Mason Simmons to make it 37-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Edgerton added on with a safety to make it 39-0. The Whippets persevered though, and finally got on the board in the fourth quarter as Ernie Magana stripped a fumble away and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown to make it 39-6.

“We still got to tackle better and we are working on that,” Grosinske said. “We have to improve our line play and that is the key.”

Edgerton improves to 1-3 on the season while Whitewater is seeking its first victory. The Whippets will travel to East Troy Sept. 16 for a 7 p.m. kick off.
