The girls soccer team played two games this week, and the offense scored one goal.

In the first game against McFarland at home April 21, the team lost, 4-1.

“The Whippets played hard but were not able to stop the relentless McFarland attack, giving up two goals in the first half and two in the second,” said Whippet assistant coach Richard Gunter. “The Whitewater midfield and attack tried to find the solution to the Spartan defense but was held in check. Finally, in the 85th minute, Autumn Bultman was able to put a rebounded shot past the McFarland keeper for the lone Whitewater goal.”

Head coach Rene Menager said the team needs to consistently possess the ball more, which is something they will work on going forward. In the second game of the week, the offense was stagnant again, but the defense held strong.

On Monday, the Whippets traveled to face Cambridge-Deerfield and neither team scored, ending in a 0-0 tie. The team is now 2-3-2 overall heading into next week, a week that will feature three games.

The first of those games is set to start at 4:45 p.m. against East Troy on Thursday at East Troy High School. East Troy is 1-6-0 on the season.

Boys tennis

The Whippets’ boys tennis team had one match this week and lost, 5-2, to McFarland on the road Monday. Whippet Head coach Alex Mory said the team showed it can be a force to be reckoned with in a match that had a lot of close results within it, despite the 5-2 final score.

“At No. 2 singles, Jan Maroske continued his dominating play and out-played his opponent with aggressiveness, 6-2, 6-1,” Mory said. “At No. 3 singles, Dineth Gunawardena played a steady game and took control of his opponent while giving up only three games with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Brodie Runez at No. 1 singles, while battling an injury, came out against a very solid No. 1 player from McFarland and went down in straight sets.”

McFarland won No. 4 singles and each of the three doubles matches. No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings for the Whippets made it competitive, though, each forcing third sets.

The team’s next match will be against Watertown Luther Prep at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Whitewater High School.

Boys golf

The boys golf team had three-meet week including a conference mini meet at Jefferson Thursday. The conference mini meets feature six teams, and the Whippets finished fifth, two strokes behind third place with a total of 182 compared with Evansville’s 180.

Jimmy Cushman shot a team-best 39, good for a sixth-place finish overall out of 30 total golfers. The Whippets then had back-to-back meets Monday and Tuesday for redemption and competed against 22 other teams in a meet that included bigger schools held at the Geneva National Golf Club.

The team finished last, but junior captain Jake Walton finished with a team-best 106. Cushman shot a 109. Walton’s 106 earned him an 84th-place finish out of 104 golfers.

A day later, another conference mini-meet took place, hosted by Whitewater. The Whippets were on their own course but couldn’t capitalize on it, and finished sixth.

Cushman bested Walton this time around with his score of 56 compared to Walton’s 57. Cushman and Walton finished 23rd and 26th, respectively. Whitewater totaled 237, 26 strokes behind East Troy’s 211 for fifth place.

The team’s next and only meet over the next week is another mini-meet that will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Towne Country Club.
