The Whitewater High School girls soccer team hit the road for its first of two matches this past week on April 14 against Big Foot. The Whippets entered the week at 1-1-1 overall and after the match against Big Foot, fell to 1-2-1.
Big Foot scored the opening goal but the Whippets responded with one thanks to Megan Reynolds. Big Foot would score two more first-half goals, though, and went on to score two more goals in the second half, ending in a 5-1 result.
On April 19, the Whippets hosted Delavan-Darien in hopes to even its record and did just that. After losing 5-1 to Big Foot, the Whippets won the match against the Comets, 5-1.
Reynolds scored the opening goal in this one, in the eighth minute, but the Comets answered back with a goal in the 20th minute. From that point on, the game went the Whippets’ way and Holly Hough scored two goals before the game’s end.
Whippets assistant coach Richard Gunter said that head coach, Rene Menager, was very pleased with the overall play of the entire team.
“The defense was very solid which gave the midfield the opportunity to control the pace and keep the attack on track,” Gunter said. “Allison Sedmack was solid in goal with 14 saves.”
The Whippets are now 2-2-1 overall in 2016. The team’s next game is April 21 against McFarland at Whitewater High School. Results will appear in next week’s issue of the Register.
Golf team improving
The Whippets’ boys golf team hit the Yahara Hills Golf Course on April 15 in the second Rock Valley Conference mini-meet of the season against five other teams and took fifth-place. Whitewater’s head coach, Chris Wiegman, said the team improved from its conference-opener.
“Leading the way were senior captains, Jimmy Cushman and Jon Caldwell, with scores of 46 and 53, respectively,” Wiegman said. “Jake Walton, Billie Jo Parker and Tommy Cushman rounded out the back half of the scoring and are gaining in consistency.”
Parker scored a 53, Tommy Cushman totaled 54 and Walton carded a 58 on Friday. Jimmy Cushman’s team-best 46 was good for a 14th-place finish out of 29 total golfers.
The Whippets’ next meet is set for April 21 at Jefferson Golf Club in the third mini-meet of the season.
Girls do well in track
Both boys and girls track teams for Whitewater High School participated in its lone meet this past week on April 19 when it hosted East Troy. Whippets head coach John Houwers said the girls competed well, especially in the field events.
“Anna Lucht had a great throw in shot, hitting 30’ for the first time,” Houwers said. “She also took the disc with a throw of 73’4” and was the only winner of two individual events.”
Other winners for the girls were Miranda Reynolds in the high jump, Keely Fiedler in the pole vault and Kelly O’Hara in the long jump. Huong Vo also won the 300-hurdles while the 4x100mrelay team took first as well.
“The boys struggled tonight, winning only the 4x100m relay and the 100m dash,” Houwers said. “Connor Rupke was a part of both of those victories. Connor has spent a lot of time in the weight room this offseason, committed to getting stronger and faster and his efforts are showing so far with the success he is having on the track.”
The team will compete against six other schools in an Invitational being held at Jefferson High School April 21.
The Whippets are also hosting a five-team Invitational starting at 10 a.m. on April 23. Results from both events will appear in next week’s issue of the Register.
