On Feb. 13 the Whippets’ wrestling team participated in regionals in Big Foot against six other teams where the top-two wrestlers in each weight class would go on to sectionals. By the meet’s end, three Whitewater wrestlers finished in the top-two and will be competing at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Milwaukee Lutheran High School.

Max Reid finished the day going 3-0 while pinning his opponent in the championship match. The other two advancing, Thomas McManaway and Jimmy DuVal, earned second place finishes.

Three more Whippets earned third-place finishes, just outside of making it to sectionals. Those wrestlers were Tyler Gamble, Adrian Casillas and Daniel Soto. Gamble won his third-place match against an opponent who he lost to the first two times this season.

Jimmy DuVal_0613Casillas got a pin to secure his third-place finish and Soto was in a really tough heavyweight class according to Whippet coach John Schimming, and no thanks to his illness he’s had all week, Soto couldn’t overcome top-ranked guys in the state to earn a top-two spot.

“I would like to express congratulations to all the wrestlers who saw their season come to an end,” Schimming said. “It is always a tough day knowing that it will be the last time some go on the mat in high school competition.

“As they know, as long as they do the best that they can and can walk off the mat knowing they did their best that is all I ask of them and am proud of them.”
