Gymnasts show up at Elkhorn Invitational

Every point mattered in the lone meet for Whitewater High School’s wrestling team on Feb. 2 when the Whippets hosted Kettle Moraine. Of the 14 total matches within the dual, each team won seven.
The difference was Kettle Moraine getting five different 6-0 wins compared to the Whippets’ four. Kettle Moraine had five 6-0 wins and two 3-0 wins.
Whitewater would obtain four 6-0 wins, a 4-0 win and two 3-0 wins. The final score was: Kettle Moraine 36, Whitewater 34.
For the Whippets, Michael Fernandez won his match, 3-0, in the 132-weight class, Jimmy Cushman won his match, 6-0, in the 138-weight class, Higmet Dauti won his match, 3-0, in the 145-weight class, Victor Fernandez won his match, 6-0, in the 152-weight class, Jimmy DuVal won his match, 6-0, in the 182-weight class, Bryce Peche won his match, 6-0, in the 220-weight class and Daniel Soto won his match, 4-0, in the 285-weight class.
This dual against Kettle Moraine was the team’s last of the regular season as next up, is the Rock Valley Conference meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Edgerton High School. Spectators are being allowed in as early as 9 a.m.
Gymnasts do well
On Jan. 30, the Whitewater High School gymnastics team participated in the Elkhorn Gymnastics Invitational and scored a 117.625. Senior Kelly O’Hara led the way every event, placing in first or second.
O’Hara would finish with titles in the floor, vault and all-around, while placing second on the beam and bars. Junior Amanda Kraayvanger took a fifth-place medal home on the beam.
“For someone who had never done gymnastics prior to her high school career, she is really something special,” Whippets head coach Jennifer Galbrecht said. “Her work ethic shows in everything she does.”
Four freshmen also showed their talents for the Whippets in the Invitational, those being Autumn Lesar, Nicole Tomomitsu, Sydney Treder and Sierra Brunner. Treder and Brunner competed in all four events.
“This is such a great group of girls and all six of these talented varsity athletes push each other to be their best,” Galbrecht said. “They stick together and don’t let the falls or mistakes affect their moods when they move on to the next event.”
The Whippets’ next meet will be a dual against Burlington and is set to start at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 at Whitewater High School.
