The No. 1-ranked division III team in the state continued its dominance this past week, as the Whitewater Whippets’ girls basketball team won its lone game, on Jan. 15, 67-28. The Whippets were at home against East Troy, and the win pushed the Whippets’ record on the season to 12-1.
Since the team’s overtime loss in its second game of the season, the Whippets have now won 11 straight. Defense was the name of the game for Whitewater, as by halftime, the team led East Troy, 33-8.
After a 14-point edge in the second half, the Whippets won by 39 points, and Rebekah Schumacher had a game-high, 20. Myriama Smith-Traore scored 14 and added nine rebounds to go along with her four assists, four blocked shots, four steals and four fouls.
The Whippets committed 18 turnovers compared to its 17 total assists, but forced 30 East Troy turnovers in the game. Whitewater also out-rebounded East Troy, 37-22.
Ali Ketterhagen added 16 points and five rebounds with her three assists and two steals. The game had an extra added fan twist to it, as Whippets head coach Judy Harms said the team, “recognized their youth program by having all levels, elementary, middle school, high school and alumni players joined together to spark the gym with a small performance, and display of flashlights to light up the night.”
Whitewater’s next game is slated to begin at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday when the team takes on Palmyra-Eagle on the road. Palmyra-Eagle enters with a 2-13 record on the season and is coming off a 49-35 loss to Delavan-Darien.
Palmyra- Eagle is on a five-game losing streak and has lost its previous four games by a combined score of 248-134.
