After going 5-18 a year ago, the Whitewater Whippets’ 2014-15 boys basketball season started off with a 62-46 loss to Union Grove at home. Following the defeat, the Whippets got a chance to get its first win against Jefferson, and did so, on Dec. 3.

The Whippets came out and showed its defensive potential, opening up a 35-16 lead going into halftime. The team then went on to win the second half, earning its first win of the season, 73-45.

Three players scored in double-figures, with Brodie Runez, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, leading the way with 15 points and knocking down a game-high three 3-pointers in the process. Both teams shot 7-of-15 from the free throw line.

In the Whippets’ next game, its third in a row at home to open the season, the team faced Oregon. Both halves were close, but Oregon nudged out a 64-56 victory. Only five Oregon players scored in the game, while the Whippets had seven, but only Runez scored over 10 points.

The game-high scorer came from Oregon, as Charlie Soule scored 25. Three other Oregon players would score at least 10 points in the game.

The Whippets’ next game starts at 7:15 p.m. on Friday against Parkview (1-5) at Whitewater High School.
