Entering the Dec. 1 game at 2-1 overall after winning a state championship a season ago, the Whitewater Whippets’ girls basketball team continued to show why they’ve had so much recent success. The Whippets played (1-0) Edgerton and jumped out to a 33-14 lead at halftime, and then both teams scored 24 points each in the second half, eventually giving Whitewater the 57-38 victory.

Whippets head coach Judy Harms said her team produced excellent balance, as four scorers produced at least 10 points each on the night.

“Overall we did a much better job taking care of the ball, and Allison Heckert did a nice job running the show when Rebekah [Schumacher] was on the bench tonight,” Harms said. “Defensively we continue to show improvements in our half-court game, but our decision-making in transition will be something we hit hard in practice before traveling to Delavan on Thursday and Parkview on Friday.”

The four double-digit scorers for the Whippets were Rebekah Schumacher (16), Myriama Smith-Traore (14), Ali Ketterhagen (12) and Allison Heckert (10). The four scored a combined 52 of the Whippets’ 57 points in the game.

On the other side, Edgerton had somewhat of the same distribution scoring-wise, with four players in total scoring in the contest. In the game against Edgerton, the Whippets shot 9-of-21 from the free throw line and according to wissports.net, are 29-of-55 from the charity stripe so far this season.

The win over Edgerton gives the Whippets a 3-1 overall record while now sitting at 2-0 in Rock Valley Conference play.
