On Sept. 3, the Whippets girls tennis team took on McFarland and came away with a 5-2 victory. McFarland was without its No. 2 singles player.

“I was worried about our depth at the beginning of the year, but that is actually turning into one of our strengths,” Whippets head coach Tim Nelson said. “Many teams that we have played have had a good No. 1 but then they dropped off a bit and our kids are all pretty even so we get stronger as we go down because of that.”

The Whippets’ No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles players won their respective matches, along with the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams.

Nearly a week later on Sept. 8, the Whippets faced Edgerton at home. Scoring-wise, the match seemed to mirror the one against McFarland. The Whippets’ No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles players each won their matches again, while the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams pulled out victories once again as well.

The Whippets won the match over Edgerton, 5-2 and face East Troy at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday at Whitewater High School. Nelson said that East Troy is on a roll and he is expecting a very tough match.

Boys soccer ties Trojans

The Whippets’ boys soccer team had two games over the past week, one against McFarland on Sept. 1 and another against East Troy on Tuesday. The team entered the week 0-2, and against McFarland, lost, 6-3. McFarland’s Schuyler Tambling scored five goals in the game.

In the team’s next game, against East Troy, a game of catch-up took place for the Whippets. After trailing 1-0, Whitewater responded, then after being down 2-1, answered with a goal of its own again, leading to a 2-2 final score.

Head coach Rene Menager said he was disappointed in the result, but was pleased with how his team played and battled after being down in two separate occasions during the match. The team’s next game is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Jefferson High School.

Runners 4th and 6th

In a meet featuring teams categorized into three different divisions, the Whippets were considered to be Division III despite being D-II for the WIAA series, Whitewater’s girls team finished 4th in its division and 12th overall, while the boys took 6th in its division and 20th overall.

The meet took place on Sept. 5 at Verona Area High School. For the girls, Andrea Sandoval finished eighth with a time of 20:39. Allison Barrett finished close behind in 16th.

On the boys side, Brodie Runez took 43rd overall with a 17:46. Behind Runez was sophomore Jacob Korf, who earned 92nd place with a new personal record time of 19:01.

The next meet for both boys and girls Whippets teams will take place on Sept. 15 at Marshall High School.
