The Whitewater High School boys tennis team had a good showing in its last three outings, laying down a pair of shutouts before falling to Big Foot Monday night in a very tight match.
Whitewater washed out Delavan-Darien 7-0 to begin last week. Josh Nast won his singles bout in straight 6-0 sets. Brodie Runez got in on the fun as well with matching 6-0 sets.
Dineth Gunawardena won his singles match 6-2, 6-4 while Mitchell Dalzin also put out a victory, 6-1, 6-0. All told, Delavan won only seven games combined in singles play.
Chamath Gunawardena and Forrest Spear won easily 6-1, 6-2 while the doubles team of Griffin Nathan and Jan Maroske won in perfect straight sets. The closest match of the day was the No. 3 dual match, won by Connor Lue and Justin Brantmeier 6-3, 6-4.
Things would stay the same heading into a meet with University Lake later last week. The Whippets enjoyed yet another 7-0 outing as players continued to rack up wins.
Nast won in straight sets again but had to work for it, delivering double 6-3s. Runez won his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2.
Gunawardena was able to overcome his opponent, winning both sets 6-0, while Dalzin put together a strong 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Spear and Gunawardena played a very smart match again the University’s No. 1 doubles team, and came out with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The No. 2 doubles team for the Whippets of Maroske and Nathan won easily 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 3 squad was able to finish off the clean sweep. Devin Samaranayake and Wentao Guo eased through with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
To kick off action this week however, the Whippets ran into Big Foot, and fell by one match, 4-3.
Nast was able to pull out a victory after losing the first set 2-6. He came back strong with a 6-4 and 6-1.
Runez also earned a victory in singles, winning 6-6 (4) and 6-2.
Both Gunawardena and Dalzin fought back brilliantly in losses to Big Foot that went three tough sets.
In doubles, the only victor was the team of Gunawardena and Spear, with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-6 (5) thriller that could have gone either way.
The rest of the slate was unable to produce the win needed for an overall victory, though Nathan and Maroske kept it within reach in three sets, 7-5, 2-6 and 5-7.
