The Whitewater High School boys swim team will send swimmers in five individuals events and two relays to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 state meet in Madison Feb. 20.
The large state contingent comes on the heels of the team’s best-ever sectional meet performance Saturday at Whitefish Bay.
Qualifying for state are Jason Shelbourn in the 100-yard backstroke, Jon Zimdars in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Benny Liang in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke as well as the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams Wentao Guo, Liang, Zimdars and Shelbourn.
The state meet will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Natatorium on Friday starting 6:30 p.m.
In the sectional meet hosted by Whitefish Bay, the Whippets established four new school records.
The 200 medley relay team took second place, setting a school record of 1 minute, 40.10 seconds. Zimdars than won the 200 I.M. in a school time of 2:01.63. He also finished second in the 100 butterfly.
Shelbourn took second in the 100 backstroke with a school record of 56.38. Liang was third in the 100 breaststroke setting a school record of 1:02.92.
Other place winners were Liang, who was second in the 100 free and Guo, who was sixth in the 100 backstroke.
Whitewater finished the meet with a second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Whippets finished fourth out of 11 teams, their best sectional finish in school history, according to coach Joan Domitrz.
Other team members scoring points for Whitewater included Karlo Martinovic, Seth Bols, Mohamed Mohamed, Andrew Gildner and the 200 freestyle relay team of Martinovic, Dineth Gunawardena and Andrew Gildner.
