The Whitewater High School boys swimming team defeated Burlington 103-67 last week to finish at 4-2 in conference and take the season with the best conference record overall for the first time in school history.
“The team knew they had to win this meet,” head coach Joan Domitrz said after the meet. “They came into the meet with the mission of winning it, and win they did!”
Domitrz said the boys “went after every event they swam, they knew the stakes and showed it in their efforts. All these boys were part of this win and these memories of achieving this goal will stay with them for a long time.”
First place finishes by WHS swimmers included: 200 medley relay (Guo, Liang, Zimdars, Shelbourn), 1:44.14; 200 freestyle – new school record – Jon Zimdars 1:48.44; 50 freestyle – Jason Shelbourn, 23.73; 100 fly – Jon Zimdars, 53.69; 100 freestyle – Benny Liang, 49.47; 500 freestyle – Andrew Gilder, 5:49.08; 200 free relay – (Bols, Marti-novic, King, Gildner), 1:45.97; 100 backstroke – Wentao Guo, 1:00.95; 100 breaststroke – Benny Liang, 1:03.58; 400 freestyle relay (Shelbourn, Zimdars, Guo, Liang), 3:30.49.
Second and third place finished by Whippets included: 200 free – Andrew Gilner (second), 2:07.68; 200 Individual Medley – Wentao Guo (second) 2:12.81 and Seth Bols (third) 2:22.95; 50 freestyle – Karlo Martinovic (third), 26.50; 100 fly – Jason Shelbourn (third), 1:00.01; 200 free relay – third (Cid, Gunawardena, Manriquez, Zoesch/Laumann), 1:56.19; 100 breaststroke – Seth Bols (second), 1:16.03; 400 freestyle relay – third (Marti-novic, King, Bols, Gildner), 3:59.24.
“Last night was also our Parents Night where the boys honored and thanked their parents for all the support this past season. It was the last home meet for our senior boys and their parents,” Domitrz said.
“We will miss all these boys, as they have represented Whippet swimming in the finest of WHS tradition. They are very good role models as athletes, leaders and students,” she added.
