In most of their games this season – and at 17-0 there is plenty to use for comparison – the Whitewater High School girls basketball team has put together a single quarter in which their dominance was a force to be reckoned with by their opponents.
Against Jefferson last week, it was the third quarter where the team turned on its jets and outscored the opponent by a margin of 24-2, en route to a 60-32 win for the Lady Whippets.
Myriama Smith-Traore led all scorers in the game with 19 points, Sarah Schu-macher added 18, and Re-bekah Schumacher contributed 13.
The coach said the team took advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves but there is still room for improvement.
“(We) took advantage of our height, dominating in the paint the majority of the game,” head coach Judy Harms said. “We need to do a better job taking care of the ball, and cleaning up some sloppiness on both ends.”
“Overall, I really liked our intensity and ability to over-come some roughness that the game presented. Jefferson did an excellent job breaking our press, something we need to continue to improve on as we start gearing up for post-season tournament play,” Harms added.
Although it’s the coach’s job to constantly find areas a team can improve on, it certainly seems as if Whitewater is running on all cylinders and has been since day one of the season.
One thing that’s clear, from the coach to the players to the fans is that the Whippets are looking to stay strong in tournament play as an early upset last season that resulted in a quick exit needs to be revenged.
