The Whitewater High School wrestling team had another busy stretch last week. When all was said and done, the team earned victories in three out of four competitions and had several individual wrestlers with strong showings.

Last Tuesday night the team hosted Janesville Parker to a dual meet. The matches were quite close, with Parker pulling out a five-point victory over the hosting Whippets.

Whitewater held the lead for most of the meet, yet Parker wrestled their way back into it, pulling even late. Going into the last match the Whippets were down a single point, with the winner of the match deciding the outcome.

It would be Parker who came out on top, overcoming an early takedown with a maneuver called a leg ride as the Whippets fell in a technical.

Whippet winners were plentiful on the night: Max Reid won at 9-2 while James Ehlen pulled out a 7-6 victory. Thomas McManaway won handily, 5-0, and Michael Lippens manufactured a first period pin.

Nathan Barrett was awarded a forfeit, Jameson Hutchins won 10-3 and Irving Sedano completed a first period pin.

On the junior varsity level, only five matches were contested due to some heavy injury problems for Janesville. Higmet Dauti and Robby Liberto both picked up victories.

“I was proud of how the student-athletes competed and they continue to show improvement on the things we have been focusing on in practice,” head coach John Schimming said in a statement about the meet.

In a string of dual matches against area schools later last week, Whitewater faired well against Brodhead/Juda, winning 41-39.

In their first dual, Tyler Lippens, John Saylor, Max Reid and Tommy Duval all took wins, two by forfeit. Yet it was the lighter boys who brought home the victory: Jameson Hutchins and Irving Sedano won forfeits while Michael Fernandez scored a 7-5 victory.

Going up against Waukesha South proved to be a difficult affair as the Whippets fell 41-24 though the experience they gained served to make them stronger.

It was the usual suspects bringing home victories for the Whippets: Johns Saylor, James Ehlen, Tommy DuVal, Irving Sedano and Daniel Soto all scored victories in their matches. Joining them was Michael Lippens who won at 220.

Getting back on the horse quickly, Whitewater earned a clear victory over Big Foot 52-30, in a match between two good schools. In an impressive stat line, the Whippets took nine matches, as follows, with the Whitewater wrestler named first:

152: John Saylor over Peter Briggs (MD 11-3)
