The Lady Whippets made quick work of conference opponent Jefferson last week, scoring 39 points in the first half, and taking a 21-point lead into intermission. Whitewater scored nearly as much in the second half, taking the game easily, 70-40.
Sarah Schumacher decimated the Jefferson defense on the inside in the Nov. 26 game, scoring 23 points to pace the Whippets.
Rebekah Schumacher added 11 points, while Kate Riemer and Cheyenne Minton each scored seven. The high numbers are even more impressive knowing Whitewater only hit two 3-pointers on the night.
“The game was very physical,” head coach Judy Harms after the game. “I liked how the girls fought through it tonight.”
Harms said the bench support shown in the game deserved recognition.
“I thought the bench did a nice job, especially finishing the game. It’s awesome to see improvements being made every game so far,” Harms said.
It was the bench that created the margin for victory. The top two scorers for Jefferson put up 26 points compared to 34 for Whitewater. The rest of the Jefferson team only mustered 14 points while the Whippets found five other players who contributed more than 6 points during the contest.
Whitewater nearly doubled Jefferson in fouls however, one part of the game that the Whippets will work on cleaning up should they find themselves in tight games going forward. Fortunately, the high amount of fouls was a non-factor in this matchup as Jefferson was only shooting 50 percent from the foul line, on 14 foul shot attempts.
The Whippets took to the road against Edgerton on Tuesday and are set to host Parkview Friday night at Whitewater High School.
