Needing to swim strong in a big way as the season nears its end, the Whitewater High School girls swim team was able to deliver against Jefferson, grinding out a 69-point win at the varsity level and a 32-point victory for the junior varsity squad.

“As we get ready for the start of each meet, we talk about the fact that everyone matters,” head coach Gina Foucault said. “Each place makes a difference in our quest to win. Finally we swam this way, each swimmer trying to beat just one person. It was awesome and our times and final score prove that.”

The Whippets put on a show, winning the following 13 races outright: Sydney Zimdars in the 200 Freestyle; Michelle Gantz in the JV 200 IM; Grace Fanshaw in the 200 IM; Megan Hartwell in the JV 100 Fly; Debra Krebs in the 100 Butterfly; Claire Treutel in the JV 500; Grace Fanshaw in the 500; Katrina Griffin, Alex Manske, Ally Carlson and Caty Strait: JV 200 Freestyle Relay; Madeline Kuhl, Anna Yeazel, Sierra Minton and Sydney Hackney in the 200 Freestyle Relay; Abby Rodriguez in the JV 100 Breaststroke; Anna Yeazel in the 100 Breaststroke; Meghan Kehoe, Yvanna Strait, Claire Treutel and Emely Rodriguez in the JV 400 Freestyle Relay; and, Sara Foucault, Grace Fanshaw, Debra Krebs and Sydney Zimdars in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

“We had so many great swims. Meghan Kehoe dropped 16 seconds in her 200 Freestyle, Karla Villarreal dropped 8 seconds in her 200 Freestyle and 5 seconds in her 100 Freestyle,” Foucault said.

“Madeline Kuhl is headed closer to the Top 10 in the 200 Freestyle with a 2:13.94. We put up 40 new personal best times,” she added.

Fifth at Platteville

Against the field at the Platteville/Lancaster Varsity meet, the Whippets finished fifth out of nine squads competing.

“We had several great swims. Grace Fanshaw swam to a medal winning first place finish in the 100 IM. Sydney Zimdars swam very well posting a best time and winning the 500 Freestyle while teammate Fanshaw ended up in 4th overall.” Foucault said. “Sydney Hackney continued the medal run with her tough fought race in the 200 IM, taking seventh place overall and Debra Krebs put in her fastest 100 Backstroke race of the season finishing in second place.”

Overall, the Whippet swimmers continue to improve, posting faster times than at previous meets, a trend that should bode well for the team as the regional and state squads begin to take shape.
