The Lady Whippets do not mess around when it comes to sealing up a goal, and that’s why last Thursday night the team went out and gave up 13 points. No, not in a quarter, not even one half…  the Lady Whippets gave up 13 points total to East Troy to clinch the RVC North Championship, 58-13.

After taking a 22-2 lead after the first quarter of the Feb. 27 game, the Whippets could never have moved the ball past mid-court and still won by nine points. This defense is downright scary right now, and it would be hard to finish off a season in a better fashion. Only three players for East Troy scored in the entire contest.

Whitewater had two separate quarters in scoring more than 20 points, in both the second and fourth quarters both teams seemed to simply coast, scoring a total of 20 points between them in those two periods.

“We will celebrate this awesome accomplishment over the weekend before getting back to business, preparing tournament,” Whippets head coach Judy Harms said after the game.

There was a good vibe running through the arena for this game that had little to do with “winning” the game. Bailey Brokmeier, who underwent a difficult surgery three years ago that ended her basketball career, was able to sneak onto the court for the Whippets and participate in the opening tip before coming off the court.

“I was really happy that Jeff Brown, East Troy’s head coach, agreed to surprising our guest announcer, Curt Brokmeier, and our team, by sneaking Bailey Brokmeier into the starting line-up just for the tip. It was a class act by tonight’s refs, and by East Troy to allow us to pull the surprise off,” Harms said.

In addition, Allison Mathews, who had to undergo ACL surgery from an injury earlier in the year, was able to join the Whippets bench in a wheelchair for the game. After the game concluded and the celebration had died down a little, Harms was able to reflect on the season as a whole.

“It’s a really outstanding group of young ladies,” explained the coach, “and seeing them all here tonight to clinch the title was priceless. Although it’s a fantastic feeling grabbing the Conference Title, it’s the positive people that surround our team that makes it even that much more enjoyable.”
