The Whippets are on a minor tear, one that could see them reach over .500 for the first time in years. Following a 5-3 run in their last eight games, Whitewater now finds itself at 7-5 in conference play and 8-10 overall. Last week, the team went on the road to Jefferson and used foul shooting, or all things, to put away Jefferson.
Scott Gorsuch, who leads the team in scoring this season, had 18 points while Brett Harms added 10 as the team shot 7-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to pick up a 53-50 victory. Trailing by eight after the first quarter, Whitewater clawed its way back to within four at the break.
The Whippets then used a pair of 15-point quarters to outlast the hosts and elevate themselves to fourth place in the very crowded Rock Valley North. Even this late in the year, no team has a losing record in conference play.
On Monday night Whitewater played a poor game against Delavan, losing 60-50, mostly due to a disastrous third period that was lopsided 19-5 in the Comets favor and even a 20-point fourth quarter could not draw the game close enough.
Gorsuch led with 16 points against Delavan while Joe Michaels added 12.
With four games to go, a winning overall record is a possibility but the Whippets will need to win out to end above .500. It’s a lofty goal but one the team believes it can achieve and lately the offense has woken up and taken a large load off the defense – at one time the sole reason the team was winning any games whatsoever so it’s definitely possible.
On Friday, Feb. 14, the team will host Evansville in what should be a winnable conference game. After that, the Whippets will have only a few remaining games to close out the 2014 regular season.
