The Lady Whippets took on Palmyra-Eagle last Friday night in a Rock Valley Conference crossover match. These types of games are important if Whitewater is to catch the still undefeated, in-conference McFarland team.
The Jan. 24 game against the Panthers started out well for the Whippets, considering they led 25-0 after the first quarter. Head coach Judy Harms believes the pre-game festivities played a role in helping inspire the team.
“We started the game on fire, which was a reflection of the “FIRED UP” t-shirts sold pre-game,” she explained. Friday’s game was an event held in support of the American Heart Organization and the home crowd held a “Red Out” event to raise funds to help fight heart disease.
Brooke Trewyn, Sarah Schumacher, and Myriama Smith-Traore led the team with 10 points each, leading the team to a breezy 52-20 victory on the night. All told, nine Whippets chipped in with points, though the team was only 6 of 13 from the foul line.
For Palmyra, no player scored more than seven points and in all only five players scored. The 20 points were the least Whitewater has given up all season. Palmyra scored 10 points in each half in what can only be described as a dominating performance by the Lady Whippets.
“The girls continued their balanced scoring,” Harms said after the game. “We have to gear up for next week now.”
Indeed, the Lady Whippets are going to need to ramp things up for a big game Thursday.
Tonight the team goes on the road to challenge undefeated Brodhead in what should be a very good game between two teams who are both on the top of their games.
On Tuesday they’ll be on the road again when they head to McFarland.
