The last week and a half for the Whippet wrestling team has been a busy slate of up and down action.

Beginning Jan. 11, the varsity squad participated in a Varsity Duel that included Whitnall, Waukesha South, Brodhead and Big Foot with Whitewater’s team finishing 1-3 on the day, defeating Big Foot in the process. James Ehlen was a perfect 4-0 on the day, continuing his notable improvement on the mat.

Last Tuesday Whitewater hosted Edgerton and lost a close match between the two squads. Going into the final four matches things looked pretty good for the Whippets, but the team collapsed a bit and dropped all four finals.

Irving Sedano (120), Max Reid (138), Scott Zahn (145) James Ehlen (160) and Tommy DuVal (195) all won matches during the event against Edgerton.

To end the week, the Whippets hosted Janesville Parker. Whitewater was able to notch a victory against the Vikings as the team won decisively. Wrestlers that won by decision included: Jameson Hutchins (106), Irving Sedano (120), Scott Zahn (145), John Saylor (152), James Ehlen (160), and Nathan Barrett (170). Whippet wrestlers winning by forfeits included: Jake Walton (113), Samson Shekey (182), Tommy DuVal (195) and Bryce Peche (220) all of whom took home wins for the Whippets.

The varsity team will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Monroe to participate in the Cheesemaker Invitational.

JV in big tourney

On Jan. 18, the Whippet JV wrestling squad took part in a 16-team tournament at Middleton High School.

The wrestlers were placed in four-man round robin brackets with each of them getting three matches during the day.

When the dust settled the team found themselves in fifth place behind four division 1 schools. The team also had three individuals bring home the gold and four more bring home the silver medal.

Ernesto Magana, Adrian Casillas and Juan Tovar all won gold medals while Jake Walton, Michael Fernandez, David Pelot and Michael Lippens all took home a silver medal.

The JV team is off until Jan. 30 when they host Watertown Luther Prep at WHS.
