After a small stretch of games against non-conference opponents, the Lady Whippets introduced themselves to Evansville by destroying their guests Jan. 16 by 49 points. The closest the game was after the first period when Whitewater held a 17-10 lead, after a 23-4 second period the rout was on, finishing out the score at 78-29.
Whitewater had four players in double figures, led by Rebekah Schumacher at 18 points. Myriama Smith-Traore had 16 points while Sarah Schumacher and Brooke Trewyn chipped in another 26 together. Evansville only had three scorers on the night, led by Brielle Greenleaf with 16 points.
“I really love how the girls are running the court and playing very unselfish,” said Whitewater head coach Judy Harms after the game. “We notched another big conference win tonight.”
Indeed, the Whippets are now 10-2 and 5-1 in conference play, tied for second with Jefferson and one behind McFarland. Even though Whitewater gave up a scant seven points per quarter against Evansville, it was just their third lowest points allowed on the season. If the team can continue to ramp up the defensive pressure, the offense will need to do very little to ensure victories.
Whitewater, now owners of a nine game winning streak, had a week off before resuming action against Palmyra-Eagle tonight.
Red-Out event
On Friday, Jan. 24 the Whippets will be hosting an event to show support for the American Heart Association. T-shirts will be available between now and the game against the Panthers for $10.
This is a group effort between Whitewater High School girls’ basketball and gymnastics team, as well as Washington Elementary School’s PATT group.
Anyone wearing a shirt will be eligible to participate in an event set to take place during halftime of the game.
