The Whippet volleyball team took the first set from the second placed team in the conference, McFarland on Tuesday. The Whippets came out firing in the first set and upset McFarland in set 1. Unfortunately, although playing well, the Whippets couldn’t hang on to sets 2, 3, and 4.
Coach Liz Miller said the team competed Tuesday. “We came out firing, I was pleased to see the competitiveness come out tonight. I think we surprised them. I am just hoping our team can see that we can compete with good teams.”
The McFarland coach commented on the great defense the Whippets played against them. “Our back court played tough, Allison Mathews, Lauren Lohff, Emilie Kachel, Lindsay Chase, Brooke Trewyn, and Kailey Reynolds all played great defense for the Whippets,” Miller said.
“I was pleased with our back court play. We also had some great blocks from our front line of Myriama Smith-Traore, Sarah Schumacher, Nicole Frison and Katy Carlson. We competed, and I was pleased with our play,” Miller said.
Statistical leaders included; Myriama Smith-Traore with 9 kills, Trewyn with eight kills, Smith-Traore with three blocks and Schumacher and Frison with two blocks each, Reynolds with 26 digs, Chase with 14 digs, Reynolds with two service aces and Chase with 12 assists.
In addition to the great play on the court, the Whippets held Senior Night to honor Dani Dolan, Katelynn Krebs, Brooke Trewyn, Lindsay Chase, Kristin Poeschel, Allison Mathews, and manager Jacob Maas who will be graduating this year.
“We sadly say goodbye to some dedicated, hard working and good kids. We wish them only the best in their future and we have full confidence they will all do well. They will be truly missed,” Miller said.
The Whippets took on Jefferson Oct. 10 during ‘Play for Trey’ and Parent’s Night. Coverage will appear in this week’s Whitewater Register.
