The Whitewater High School Whippets volleyball team went 4-1 overall in the Brodhead tournament Saturday for a first place finish in the silver division and fifth place finish overall. The Whippets finished first in pool play by defeating Juda and Beloit Turner.
“After our lunch break we faced Monticello and suffered our only loss. It was a wake-up call for us. We turned it around and we ended up winning the next two matches against New Glarus and Belleville to finish first in the silver. We wanted to be in the gold bracket, unfortunately with the loss to Monticello, we could only finish in the silver,” coach Miller said.
The Whippets saw some great play from the team overall, according to Miller.
“We served tough led by Emilie Kachel and Sarah Schumacher. When we can take teams out of system by serving tough, we can win some games. Emilie and Sarah did just that finishing with 14 and 10 service aces on the day. We also saw Katy Carlson step up on the right side. When she started feeling confident, she began attacking the ball. As a team, I thought we came together much more then we have seen so far this season. I was happy with the overall play, even though we belonged in the gold bracket,” she said.
Statistical leaders for the day included: senior Brooke Trewyn leading with 43 kills and junior Kailey Reynolds with 39; freshman Myriama Smith-Traore with six solo blocks and six block assists; junior Sarah Schumacher with two solo blocks and seven block assists; Allison Mathews and Emilie Kachel with 33 digs a piece, and; senior Lindsay Chase dishing out 103 assists on the day.
Team results were as follows: 1st, Brodhead; 2nd, Monticello; 3rd, Lake Mills; 4th, Monroe; 5th, Whitewater; 6th, Belleville; 7th, New Glarus; 8th, Juda; 9th, Argyle; 10th, Evansville; 11th, Beloit Turner; 12th, Albany.
