It was an historic night at Whitewater High School Monday. A record that had stood for 33 years fell as Brooke Trewyn scored 28 points in a 54-36 Whitewater win over Clinton.
Going into the game, Trewyn needed just 14 points to break the all-time scoring record for girls basketball at WHS. Kristi Pease, a 1980 WHS graduate, had set the record in 1980 with 1,055 points. Trewyn now has 1,070 points, and she is only a junior.
“Brooke was on fire to start a key RVC crossover game,” head coach Judy Harms said. “Brooke scored all 16 points in the first quarter to set the tone.”
Harms noted that Pease, who lives in Arizona, had contacted her prior to the game to let her know she was unable to attend the game, but wished she could be there in person.
The Whippets held a 16-10 lead after one quarter and built the lead throughout the game. The girls led 28-19 at the half, and following a big 20-6 margin in the third quarter, led 48-25 going into the final eight minutes.
With the win, Whitewater is now 14-2 overall and 9-2 in the Rock Valley Conference.
Besides Trewyn’s 28 points, the Whippets got 13 points from Kailey Reynolds.
Neither team made it to the free-throw line a lot in this game, as Whitewater was seven of 10, and Clinton six of 12.
The Clinton game was a make-up game from Dec. 20.
Vs. McFarland
A big 21-8 third-quarter margin propelled Whitewater to a 54-37 win over McFarland Friday.
The Whippets got off to a slow start, with their shots falling to fall in the first half. As a result, Whitewater trailed 10-8 after one quarter and held just a slim 19-16 lead at the half. The strong third quarter changed that.
“The Whippets erupted in the third quarter picking it up with scrappy defense and connecting on their outside shots as well,” Harms said.
Trewyn was the only Whippet in double figures with 16 points, but Harms noted it was a team effort.
“We had a lot of different players contributing, and that makes us tough to stop once we get going,” Harms said.
One player that Harms said played exceptional was Heather Hookstead.
“Heather played an amazing game, coming up with rebounds and steals,” Harms noted. “Sometimes fans tend to focus on just scoring, and even though Heather did knock in buckets (she had seven points), it was her defensive performance that sparked a fire on the Whippets overall play.”
The Whippets struggled some at the free-throw line in this game, sinking just 13 of 27 attempts.
