Facing their third state-ranked team in a 10-day stretch, the Whitewater High School girls basketball team could not stay with the undefeated Brodhead squad Jan. 17 in a 48-32 loss at home.
The Whippet girls, who have also been state-ranked, won one of the three games and are now 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the Rock Valley Conference.
“Brodhead is a tough team,” head coach Judy Harms said. “They played solid defense and Whitewater struggled to execute, as well as hit shots.”
The Whippets stayed with Brodhead for the first half despite shooting poorly. Whitewater led 10-9 after one quarter, but fell behind 18-15 at the half.
The second half was all Brodhead, as they outscored the Whippet girls 30-17.
“Overall, our shooting percentage was the major difference in the game,” Harms said. “Had we been hitting our shots it would have been a different game.”
Harms noted Brodhead’s defense made Whitewater work for everything. Brodhead did a good job of keeping the Whippet girls out of the paint.
“Brodhead did an excellent job holding Brooke Trewyn to 14 points,” Harms added. “The rest of our team had a terrible shooting night.”
Only four Whippets scored in this game.
Brodhead had three players in double figures, led by Carly Mohns with 16.
At the free-throw line, Brodhead sank 16 of 26 shots, while Whitewater was seven of 12.
“The last few weeks have been pretty long,” Harms said. “Our kids just need a break to regroup.”
Schedule
The Whippets will get that break, not having a game for eight days.
Next up for Whitewater is a game against RVC foe McFarland at home on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7:15 p.m.
Next week, the girls will host Clinton on Monday, Jan. 28, at 7:15 p.m., and then will travel to Big Foot for a matchup on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7:15 p.m.
The Clinton game is one rescheduled from Dec. 20.
