With a relatively easy 42-6 win over Beloit Turner Friday, the Whitewater High School football team improved to 2-1 this season, equaling the total number of wins all of last season.

“We played very well at times,” head coach Doug Parker said. “We had a few lapses, but overall played very well.”

Parker noted that the Whippet boys were the more physical team in this game, controlling the line of scrimmage.

That was evident by the fact that the Whippets chewed up large chunks of yardage on the ground throughout the game. Overall, they totaled 353 yards of offense, all on the ground. With that coming on just 28 attempts, Whitewater averaged 12.6 yards per carry.

The Whippets had eight carries of 24 or more yards, including runs of 51, 59 and 60 yards. The 51- and 59-yarders were for touchdowns.

“Definitely big plays helped us,” Parker said. “It’s a new offense and we’re definitely getting in sync.”

Wendel Welter and Zach Miles each had 116 yards on the ground, with Welter collecting his yardage on six attempts and Miles on seven. Brady Winger added 66 yards on just three attempts.

“All of our backs did very well,” Parker said. “Our offensive line blocked really well. We were moving people. We had some big holes to run through.”

Whitewater got on the board first, scoring with 9:47 to go in the first quarter on a Welter one-yard run. Andy Cooper kicked the extra point.

A little over four minutes later (at 5:24), Miles exploded for a 59-yard TD to make it 13-0. Cooper’s kick made it 14-0.

Turner cut the lead to 14-6 with 6:32 left in the second quarter on a two-yard run, but could get no closer.

A 51-yard TD scamper by Welter with just 1:09 left in the half gave the Whippets a 21-6 lead.

Parker said his defense played well at times in the first half, but also gave up a couple of drives. On the Turner touchdown drive, a couple of penalties and mistakes helped Turner.

The second half was all Whitewater, as Parker noted the defense played really well, and the offense put up 21 points in the third quarter.

With 10:12 left in the quarter, John Saylor scored on a 25-yard run. Cooper’s kick made it 28-0.

Two minutes later, at the 8:07 mark, Welter got his second touchdown of the night, this time on a 25-yard run. The extra point kick by Cooper made it 35-0.

With 5:14 left in the third, Miles got his second TD on a three-yard run. Cooper’s kick made it 42-0.

Whitewater attempted just one pass in this game, and it was completed, but for no gain.

Neither team committed a turnover in this game.

Turner managed just 102 total yards, with 59 of those coming on the ground and 43 through the air.

Schedule

Whitewater hosts Rock Valley Conference foe Edgerton on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m.

Both Edgerton and Whitewater are 2-1 overall.

“It’s a must win as far as making it to the playoffs,” Parker said. “We will really need to play well.”
