The work continues for the Big Foot-Williams Bay wrestling team and second-year head coach Tyler Heck.
And by all accounts, things are trending in the right direction.
Heck remains hopeful that lessons learned a year ago by his young squad will help the Chiefs take a step forward in 2019-20.
“While the dual meet record and scores from last year may not look good, we were young and inexperienced overall,” Heck said. “With a year of experience together, I think this team is ready to start competing with some other teams in the Rock Valley.
“Numbers are up and many of the returning wrestlers put in a lot of work in the offseason. Last year, we wanted to continually improve on a daily basis. This year, we want to take that improvement and start showing it off.”
Heck added that doesn’t mean he’s not looking for improvement – but now is the time to start seeing some results.
“We need to start to compete at the next level,” he said. “It will look a little different at the end of the year being Division 1 this year, but to start off, nothing really changes…”
The Chiefs will make a trip to the Whitewater Tournament on Saturday, at 8 a.m.
“(On Saturday), we are going to see some new schools we don’t normally see, along with some RVC schools, so it will be a good measuring stick early on for many of our guys to see where they stand and what they need to do to improve,” he said.
