Two victories last week sent the Big Foot-Williams Bay girls soccer team to within two victories of a trip to the WIAA Division 3 State
Tournament.
But now the Chiefs really face a big task.
Big Foot, seeded fifth in the sectional, was slated to travel to top-seeded Waukesha Catholic Memorial on Thursday afternoon for a 4 p.m. sectional semifinal matchup.
The winner faces either second-seeded New Berlin West or third-seeded Grafton in Saturday’s sectional final at Catholic Memorial with a berth at state on the line.
Catholic Memorial (21-4-1) was the state’s top-ranked team in the final WisSports.net poll, while Grafton was ranked second and New Berlin West was fourth.
Big Foot (13-4) advanced to the sectional with a 2-1 victory June 1 over Shorewood.
All three of the game’s goals were scored in the first half. Abby Peterson had both of the Chiefs’ goals.
Big Foot goalie Maylani Venegas had eight saves.
In the regional semifinal two days earlier, Big Foot had two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 victory over visiting Delavan-Darien.
Sophie Rasmussen led the Chiefs with two goals, followed by Maya Torrez and Abby Van de Bogert both with one. Peterson tallied three assists, while Venegas had four saves.
