There never seemed to be a moment last week at Clinton when the Big Foot girls basketball team could quite pull away from the Cougars.
But the Chiefs never really were in trouble, either.
In a back-and-forth game, it was Big Foot’s stifling defense and a solid effort from the free-throw line that proved to be the difference in a 56-49 Rock Valley Conference victory that improved Big Foot to 10-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play.
Big Foot led 27-22 at halftime and outscored Clinton by two in the final 18 minutes.
“It was a game of streaks or runs, whatever you want to call it,” Big Foot coach Rick Schoenbeck said. “I think both teams started a little slow. We went on a run, they would catch up, and that’s kind of how it finished.”
