Baseball splits two, softball falls, golf team struggles

The Big Foot-Williams Bay boys tennis team is keeping pace at the top of the Rock Valley Conference standings.
And now the big meets are approaching – quickly.
Big Foot split a pair of matches at last week’s East Troy Triangular in a tune up for what was certain to be a key RVC dual meet Thursday afternoon with East Troy.
Both the Chiefs and the Trojans entered that meet at 3-0, one win ahead of Watertown Luther Prep’s 2-1.
At the triangular, Big Foot dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Elkhorn, but bounced back to role past Janesville Craig 5-1-1.
Picking up wins against Elkhorn were senior Nelson Tovar at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 7-5 (10-3); the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Logan Grunow and Hamilton Smith, 6-0, 6-2; and the No. 2 team of senior Beau Cary and sophomore Christian Karabas, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Dropping matches to the Elks were junior Jack Heidenreich at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 7-5 (4-10); senior Alexis Duran at No. 3, 3-6, 1-6; senior Evan Karabas at No. 4, 1-6, 1-6; and the No. 3 team of sophomore Gunnar Smith and freshman Jack Grunow, 1-6, 1-6.
Big Foot won five of the six completed matches against Craig. The No. 1 doubles match was stopped because of inclement weather with Big Foot ahead 6-0, 4-3.
Winning against the Cougars were Heidenreich, 6-4, 6-4; Duran, 6-2, 3-6 (10-6); Evan Karabas at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1; Cary-Christian Karabas at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-3; and Smith-Grunow at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1.
Tovar fell at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 0-6.
Following Thursday’s showdown with East Troy, the Chiefs are back in action Saturday when they compete at the Stoughton Invitational.
Baseball splits two
The Big Foot baseball team scored in each of its first three at bats Tuesday at Brodhead to take control in a 6-1 RVC victory.
Jack Hereley led the eight-hit attack with two, including a double. He also scored once and drove in two.
Also collecting RBI for the Chiefs were Travis Berryman, Austin West, Braden McCarthy and Nielsen.
Heath Dillenbeck earned the win, as he allowed just two hits, one earned run, four walks and struck out five in five innings of work. McCarthy allowed just one hit in two innings of work to pick up the save.
The Chiefs had just four hits in a 13-0, five-inning loss April 28 to visiting Parkview. The Vikings scored six runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Big Foot hosted Brodhead on Thursday and travels to Palmyra-Eagle on Tuesday, May 9.
Parkview edges Chiefs
A five-run third inning by visiting Parkview was just enough to stop the Big Foot softball team in a 5-4 RVC decision April 28.
Big Foot pulled within a run with two-run innings in both the fourth and sixth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Leaders were Riley Davis (two hits, two runs, two RBI), Yesenia Gonzalez (hit, run), Abbi Snudden (hit, run, two RBI) and Sophia Trajkovich (RBI).
Davis took the loss, as she allowed eight hits, five earned runs, two walks and struck out eight.
Big Foot (2-10) hosted Brodhead on Tuesday. Results were unavailable. The Chiefs travel to Edgerton on Monday, May 8 and to Palmyra-Eagle on Tuesday, May 9.
Golf struggles at invite
The Big Foot boys golf team encountered tough sledding at last week’s Evansville Invitational, as the Chiefs finished with a 442.
Lodi won the team title with a dominating effort of 316 at the Evansville Golf Club, well ahead of second-place Lakeside Lutheran’s 343.
Lars Larsen shot a 103 (54-49) to lead Big Foot, followed by Bo Freytag with a 111 (53-58), Tim Weiss with a 112 (55-57), Hans Murtell with a 116 (56-60) and Jake Trosclair with a 117 (66-51).
Big Foot competed in an RVC mini meet Tuesday at the Glen Erin Golf Club and at Evergreen Golf Club, Elkhorn, on Thursday. The Chiefs travel to the Abbey Springs Invitational at Monday, followed by another conference mini meet Tuesday at Prairie Woods Golf Course.
