Big Foot beats Edgerton in conference dual

A home dual meet last week gave the Big Foot-Williams Bay boys tennis team a great chance for a little revenge.

And that’s just what the Chiefs exacted – at Edgerton’s expense.

Big Foot knocked off the Tide, a team they lost to earlier this season at a tournament, 5-2 to pick up solid Rock Valley Conference dual meet victory.

“We came back and pulled out a couple of gutsy wins the second time around,” Big Foot coach Chris Chen said.

Picking up victories for Big Foot were sophomore Jack Heidenreich at No. 1, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 12-10; senior Liam McCarthy at No. 2, 6-0, 7-6 (0); the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Michael Heidenreich and Adrian Hernandez, 6-0, 6-2; the No. 2 team of juniors Hamilton Smith and Logan Grunow, 6-1, 6-1; and the No. 3 team of senior Ben Malone and junior Nelson Tovar, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-4.

Falling to the Tide were junior Alexis Duran at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 0-6, and junior Evan Karabas at No. 4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, (9-11).

Chen said he’s been pleased with his team’s improvement throughout the season.

“The season has gone (well) so far,” he said. “We’ve gotten some solid doubles play, and our singles players have really come into their own and improved their overall development.”

The win over Edgerton came on the heels of two straight dual losses earlier in the week.

Big Foot opened play with a 5-2 setback to Southern Lakes Conference foe Union Grove, followed by a 4-3 loss to RVC rival East Troy May 4.

Picking up wins over East Troy were Karabas at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2; Michael Heidenreich-Hernandez at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-3; Smith-Grunow at No. 2, 6-0, 7-5; and Malone-Tovar at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2.

The Chiefs’ No. 2 and 3 doubles teams each posted victories over Union Grove, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.

Big Foot closes out its dual meet schedule next Monday, May 16, followed by the RVC Tournament at UW-Whitewater May 17.

“I’m looking for us to compete and give it our all in conference,” Chen said. “The competition is tough, and as long as the boys leave it all out on the court, I’ll be happy.

“We have a tough road in the postseason, but I want our team to stay aggressive and confident. You have to believe you can win and do everything you can to make that happen to be successful against quality opponents.”
