A number of absences in the lineup Tuesday night certainly didn’t help the Big Foot-Williams Bay wrestling team’s cause.
And when the opponent is an always-strong Brodhead-Juda team, anything less than a full roster will make that challenge even more difficult.
Big Foot gave up forfeits in seven weight classes, and that turned out to be the difference in a 57-18 Rock Valley Conference setback.
The Chiefs only lost three matches on the mat, but the forfeit points were just too much to overcome
Winning matches for Big Foot were Mickey Setteducate (152), 8-7 over Nick Hack, and Will Utesch (220), 3-2 over Stephen Voights. The Chiefs also picked up forfeit wins at 126 and 106 pounds.
Dropping decisions to the Cardinals were James Welsh (120), 8-5 to Caleb Erb; Logan Chase (138), by pin in 3:47 to Tommy Grabowski; and Raul Reyes (160), by pin in 3:53 to Derick Hartman.
Big Foot gave up forfeits at 132, 145, 170, 182, 195, 285 and 113 pounds.
Earlier in the week, the Chiefs traveled to a dual meet tournament a Whitewater. Joining the Chiefs and the Whippets at the Jan. 10 event were Brodhead-Juda and Waukesha South.
Only results for the dual against Brodhead, a 48-18 loss, were available this week. Final scores for the remaining dual meets were unknown.
Winning matches for the Chiefs were Reyes (160), by pin in 5:41 to Hartman; Berryman (106), 4-0 to Blake Burns; and Welsh (120), 5-3 to Erb. Big Foot also received a forfeit win at 113 pounds.
Falling to the Cardinals were Peter Briggs (152), by pin in 1:04 to Hack; Utesch (220), 4-3 to Voights; Chase (132), by pin in 37 seconds to Justin Sangermano; and Setteducate (145), 7- to Tyler Hoesly.
The Chiefs also gave up forfeits at 170, 182, 195, 285 and 138 pounds. Both teams forfeited at 126 pounds.
Big Foot returns to action Friday night when it hosts Clinton. The Chiefs will compete at the Badger Invitational Saturday, Jan. 17, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Other teams scheduled to compete are Middleton, Milton, Racine Park, Sun Prairie, Union Grove, Waterford and Badger.
Entering this week, Milton was ranked third in the latest Crossface Magazine Division 1 poll, while Badger was honorable mention.
