The 2014 spring season ended at the highest level for three Big Foot High School athletes.
Freshman Brooke Wellhausen competed at the WIAA Division 2 State Track and Field Meet at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, while seniors Adam Kolnik and Seb Lauterbach played at the Division 2 State Tennis Tournament on the UW-Madison campus.
Lauterbach, the eighth seed in the field, won his first match last Thursday night with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over McFarland’s Tim Vallon, but fell in the second round to Regis senior Hunter Cameron 3-6, 6-1, 5-7.
The state trip came to an end in the first round for Kolnik, who lost 2-6, 0-6 to Roncalli senior Brett Giesen.
Lauterbach finished his last high school season at 21-2, while Kolnik was 22-2 this spring. The state trips were the fourth straight for Kolnik and the third for Lauterbach.
The Prairie School’s Zane Navratil became the first Division 2 player in state history to win three straight individual titles with his 6-1, 6-4 win over University School’s Kai Sane. Navratil finished the year at 31-0 overall.
Big Foot’s other state entrant last weekend, Wellhausen, competed in the 400 at the Division 2 track and field meet.
Wellhausen posted a time of 1:01.57 in the preliminary race, but did not qualify for the finals. The state title went to Mount Horeb sophomore Nadia Williams in 25.51.
Halma competes at sectional, ties for 33rd
Big Foot senior boys golfer Craig Halma traveled to the House on the Rock Resort, Spring Green, last week to compete in the Division 2 sectional tournament.
Halma posted a round of 87 (41-46), which was good for a tie for 33rd-place overall.
Top team scores were turned in by River Valley with a 300, Edgewood with a 310, Lodi with a 316, Edgerton with a 327 and McFarland with a 335.
Edgewood and River Valley followed that strong sectional effort at the state meet earlier this week with second- and fourth-place overall finishes, respectively. Edgewood posted a team score of 614, while River Valley had a 649.
Catholic Memorial won the state title with a 607.
Soccer falls in shootout
The Big Foot-Williams Bay girls soccer team split a pair of shootouts last week, including a hard-fought battle Saturday in the Division 2 regional final at Delavan-Darien.
Big Foot and Delavan battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation, but the Comets won the shootout 3-2 to advance to this week’s sectional tournament.
The Chiefs finished the season at 13-5-1 overall. Delavan, the No. 2 seed in the regional, hosts No. 5 Monroe Thursday in a sectional semifinal.
Big Foot, the third seed, opened regional action June 5 with a shootout win over sixth-seeded Cambridge-Deerfield. The Chiefs outscored the visitors 4-3 in the extra session.
