Badgers break Westosha Central’s undefeated status

The Lake Geneva Badgers passed a stiff test Sept. 15 against a Westosha Central team led by Utah transfer quarterback Jaden Jackson. The Falcons started the season 4-0 and 2-0 in the Southern Lakes Conference and were tied with the Badgers for first place in the SLC.
Not any more. Jackson completed 26 of 46 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns, but that was about all the Falcon offense produced. The Badger defense held the Falcons to 54 yards rushing, 43 of them on one play. The Badgers pounded the ball on the ground rushing for 525 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-26 road win that left the Badgers (4-1, 3-0 SLC) in first place.
Badger got on the board first on a two-yard run by Will Keller. Westosha Central answered right back with a seven-yard pass from Jackson to Samy Graco. The extra point was no good. After getting the ball back, Greco ripped off a 43-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons the lead. Niko Lemke ran it in from three yards out for the two-point conversion giving the Falcons a 14-7 lead after one quarter.
Wes Sontag scored from three yards out to tie the game in the second quarter. Jackson connected with Cam Krueger on a seven-yard touchdown pass but the conversion again failed. The falcons led 20-14 at the half. Westosha Central opened the lead to 26-14 on a Jackson 53-yard pass to Nic Frederick. Again, the conversion failed and the Falcons failed to score again. The Badgers outscored the Falcons 28-0 from there.
Keller took center stage scoring on a 20-yard touchdown run, a 79-yard touchdown run, a three-yard two-point conversion run and a 10-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Colton Surges added a one-yard touchdown run.
Keller rushed for 261 yards on 16 carries. Surges had 109 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Sontag had 71 yards on 15 rushes. Nick Aufmuth had another interception on defense.
The Badgers host Delavan-Darien (2-3, 1-2 SLC) on Friday. The Comets lost to Union Grove 21-14 last week.
Golf ends SLC season
The Badger golf team finished the Southern Lakes Conference season 5-1 in dual matches with a 190-197 win over Waterford played at Geneva National on Sept. 14.
Holly Murphy led all scorers with a 42. Madison Whitehead was right behind her with a 43. Kayla Kerns shot 52 and Kristin Walczynski shot 53.
The Badgers also defeated Wilmot 201-213 on Sept. 12. Murphy led the way with a 42. Whitehead shot 45, Kerns shot 55 and Jaidan Schuenmann shot 59.
The Badgers play next on Thursday at the Southern Lakes Conference meet at Brighton Dale Golf Course in Kansasville. The Badgers are in second place in the SLC behind undefeated Union Grove and must finish ahead of the Broncos on Thursday to have a chance to win the SLC title.
Soccer splits four
The Badger soccer team started the week with a 5-0 road loss to an undefeated Woodstock team on Sept. 11. Woodstock (11-0) took a 3-0 halftime lead on goals by Josue Carreno, Brian Ricco and Hector Reynoso. Rico and Caleb Warmbier with an assist by Gio Cervantes, added two more goals in the second half. Woodstock outshot the Badgers 25-12 and 15-5 on goal.
The Badgers lost to Union Grove on the road 5-3 on Sept. 12. Payton Aranda put Badger up 1-0. Union Grove (9-0-1, 2-0) scored four goals in a row to take charge by Cole Anderson, Logan Farrington and Alec Dam. Cole Goff scored to make it 4-2 Broncos at the half. Aranda, with an assist by Jose Diaz, scored for Badger, and Farrington scored for Union Grove in the second half.
The Badgers came back to defeat Westosha Central (2-5-1, 1-2 SLC) by a score of 3-2 on the road on Sept. 14. Diaz gave the Badgers a 1-0 halftime lead with an unassisted goal. Aranda added a goal on an assist by Goff early in the second half. Diaz, with an assist by Goff, made it 3-0. Westosha Central’s Bobby McNeal scored twice to make it close, both times unassisted. Badger (4-5-1, 2-1 SLC) outshot the Falcons 24-10 and 12-5 on goal.
The Badgers (5-5-1, 1-2) defeated Watertown on the road 3-2 on Sept. 16. Josh Gagliani, with an assist by Aranda, gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Ethan Bergen and Ethan Kratzer gave Watertown (4-4-2) a 2-1 lead at the half. Aranda, with an assist by Goff, tied it, and Korbin Lafferty, with an assist by Aranda, gave the Badgers the lead in the second half.
Volleyball goes 4-1
The Badger volleyball team won four out of five games in the Delavan Invitational on Sept. 16.
The Badgers (9-9-1, 1-2 SLC) defeated Janesville Craig/Parker 2-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-8). Badger defeated Beloit Memorial (0-12) 2-0 (27-25, 25-21). The Badgers lost to Wilmot (5-6, 1-2) 2-1 (21-15, 17-21, 14-16). The Badgers defeated Delavan-Darien (3-16, 0-3) 2-1 (25-18, 22-25, 15-7). Badger beat Racine Lutheran (11-12) 2-0 (25-19, 27-26).
The Badgers lost twice during the week. The Badgers lost to Union Grove (11-7, 1-2) 3-0 (18-25, 13-25, 12-25) on Sept. 12. Indian Trail (7-7) beat the Badgers 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 25-18, 16-18) on Sept. 14.
Cross country takes second and fourth
The Badger girls cross country team finished second at the Whitefish Bay Invitational on Sept. 14. Amara Trent finished third with a time of 20:16. Ava Trent ran 20:50, Olivia Deering ran 21:14, Erin Wruk ran 21:15, and Maureen Clifford ran 21:39.
The Badger boys finished fourth. Gustavo Gordillo finished third with a time of 16:40. Logan Koehling ran 17:18, Leonel Luna ran 18:04, Juan Nova ran 18:04, and Keegan Hasse ran 18:39.
