Wrestlers take second in Mid-States Invite

The Badger High School girls basketball team took second place in the Badger Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30. The tournament was delayed one day by weather.
Badger won its semifinal game Dec. 29 over Cudahy 45-40. Badger took control in the first half, limiting Cudahy to 15 points and building up an eight-point lead at the half. Cudahy would not go away in the second half, but Badger held on for the win.
Badger was led by Sam Tisa’s 17 points. Courtney Oomens added 13, and Jenn Freeman had nine. Hannah Kulas led Cudahy with 11. Camryn Kratt added nine.
Slinger beat Big Foot 42-41 in the other semifinal. Slinger won the first half 28-21, but the Chiefs came back in the second half, outscoring Slinger 20-14, but it just wasn’t enough.
Slinger’s Emily Rothenhoefer led all scorers with 14 points. Big Foot got 10 points each from Morgan Stalker and Payton Courier.
Badger faced Slinger in the championship game Dec. 30. Slinger (8-4) came away with the 44-33 win. Badger (4-6) led at the half 23-22, but Slinger dominated the second half to pull away with the title.
Kylah Schmidt led all scorers with 14. Rothenhoefer added 12. Tisa led Badger with eight.
Big Foot (6-4) defeated Cudahy (6-4) 57-41 in the consolation game. The Chiefs ran out to a 30-11 halftime lead and cruised from there. Courier led the Chiefs with 11, and Courtney Schoenbeck added 10. Kaytin Sagan led Cudahy with 11. Jessica Keesler added nine.
The Badgers hosted Burlington on Tuesday and will host Westosha Central on Friday. The Badger boys resumed action Tuesday at Kenosha Tremper and host Burlington on Saturday afternoon.
Wrestlers take second
The Badger wrestling team placed second out of 35 teams at the Mid-States Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Dec. 29 and 30 with 180.5 points. Stoughton won the event with 234 points.
Cole Mikrut led the way, taking first place at 285 pounds and earning 34 team points. Mikrut pinned Erik Haried, of Stoughton, Hunter Hummel, of Elkhorn, B.J. Thomas, of Freeport, and Sam Skornicka, of Two Rivers, to win the championship for his weight class.
Michael Peter took second at 160 pounds earning 23 points. Peter won a 4-3 decision over Artimus Cunningham of Sycamore, won a 14-5 major decision over Parker Keckeisen of Nicolet, and won a 9-4 decision over Willem Kupets, of New Trier, before losing in the championship match by 5-3 decision to Bryce Jacobson, of Elkhorn.
Reggie Kelly earned 22 points by placing fourth at 195 pounds. Kelly pinned Jack Schoeder, of Cedar Grove-Belgium, and Luther Egerson, of Racine Case, before getting pinned by Christian Brunner, of Dundee Crown, in the semifinal. Kelly then pinned Connor Wood, of Vernon Hills, in the consolation semifinal and lost by 7-2 decision to Sergio Villalobos, of Downer’s Grove South, in the third place match.
Robbie Mutimer earned 18 points for taking fourth at 132 pounds. Mutimer won a 5-2 decision over Tommy Bianchi, of Two Rivers, but lost a 9-3 decision to Nathan Roth, of Jefferson. Mutimer then pinned Julio Cabrales, of Maine East, and defeated Bianchi again, this time by 5-1 decision. Mutimer won a 7-0 decision over Emmanuel Garrison-Hooks, of West Bend East, to reach the third place match but lost to Patrick Ryan, of New Trier, by 8-0 major decision.
George Somerville finished fifth at 170 pounds and earned 17.50 points. Nate Otero finished fifth at 138 pounds earning 15 points.
