The Elkhorn Area High School boys swimming team won 10 of 11 events and beat Jefferson/Cambridge 124-46 Jan. 21 in a Southern Lakes Conference dual meet at Elkhorn.
The Elks celebrated Senior Night against Jefferson/Cambridge, and the team’s seniors did not disappoint. An Elkhorn senior either won, or played a role in winning, each event of the Elks’ event victories.
Seniors Hunter Johnson, Willie Pinnow and Lucas Koepke each won four events. Senior Danny Bush won three events and senior Ryan Daehn won one.
“This group of seniors has a lot of talent,” Richardson said. “They have worked really hard. It’s fun to have watched them for the last four years and evolve and continue to progress and push each other.”
In addition, coach Jamie Richardson said the Elks set team records in the 200 and 400-meter relays. Koepke, Johnson, Bush and Pinnow won the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.09) and 400 freestyle (3:41.22).
Mark Ambrose, Jake Dahlgren, Daehn and Jeffrey Meersman won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:06.49.
Johnson won the 200 freestyle (1:58.79) and 100 butterfly (1:00.63). Bush won the 100 backstroke (1:12.22). Pinnow set a personal best in winning the 200 individual medley (2:21.90) by 13.48 seconds, and also won the 400 freestyle (4:29.81).
Koepke won the 50 freestyle (26.15) and 100 freestyle (59.95).
Richardson praised Jeffrey Meersman, who finished second in the 100 freestyle with a personal best time of 1:01.16.
The Elks finished with 23 personal best times as a team.
“It was good to see some of those seniors go out with those personal best times, and swimming well at their last home meet,” Richardson said. “We’re in a good position. We posted lots of good times, and we’re not even in the postseason.”
Elkhorn swims Saturday in the Racine Invitational at Racine Park High School.
