Elkhorn’s Payton Christensen forced overtime with a late basket, but the Elks lost 53-45 at home to Burlington Jan. 19 in a Southern Lakes Conference girls high school basketball game.
Elks coach Jeff Brown said Christensen tied the score at 45-45 with a layup with 12 seconds left in regulations. The Elks did not score in overtime.
Elkhorn (6-7, 2-6 SLC) led Burlington 23-230 at halftime. The Demons outscored the Elks 33-22 in the second half.
“It was a close game the entire night,” Brown said. “We had very balanced scoring, and we had a great week of preparation. We’re getting better, in small steps, in everything we do.”
Demons standout Jessa Burling carried Burlington (10-6, 6-2 SLC) to victory. The senior forward finished with 26 points, 19 rebounds and 14 steals. Burling is the Demons’ career leader in rebounds, assists and points.
Christensen and Morgan Hunter led Elkhorn with 11 points each. Maddi Ivey and Ryley Rand each scored eight points for the Elks.
The Elks beat Kenosha Christian Life 51-15 Jan. 16 in a non-conference game at Elkhorn Area High School.
“Defensively, we played very well against a lesser opponent than were accustomed to playing,” Brown said. “Everybody played significant minutes.”
Elkhorn led KCL 29-5 at halftime. The Elks outscored the Eagles (1-11) 22-10 in the second half.
Haley Remington led Elkhorn with 11 points. Morgan Hunter added 10.
Elkhorn plays a SLC game tonight at Waterford (4-11, 2-6 SLC).
