An Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team that coach BZ Kayser said is not yet playing as well as he expects opened the season by beating its first two opponents by a combined score of 8-2.
The Elks beat Janesville Craig 3-1 Aug. 24 at Craig and won 5-1 Aug. 22 at Stoughton. Both were non-conference matches.
The Elks played a non-conference match Tuesday at Mukwonago. Elkhorn opened play in the prestigious Gusho Tournament Thursday at Brookfield East.
Kayser said this season’s version of the Elks is the farthest along of any of his previous teams at the start of the season. Kayser said what he saw from the Elks in their first two matches did not match his expectations.
“We were definitely the better team in both matches,” Kayser said. “I just thought we’d be more dominant. I guess my expectations were higher than what I thought.”
Ben Burrows scored twice against Stoughton. Kevin Romero, Adam Riegle and Vince Umnus each scored once.
“We’re moving the ball well,” Kayser said. “We’re creating a lot of opportunities to score. We’re dangerous offensively. We’ve got some things we have to get cleaned up.”
Bryant Romero scored two goals and Ben Burrows one against Stoughton.
Kayser said finding a replacement for graduated striker Sid Babu is an early season priority.
“In both games, we’re still trying to figure out who will be the main guy up top,” Kayser said. “We’ve tried a bunch of different guys.
“I’m guess that’s the big thing I’m disappointed in – I haven’t found that yet that I think can do (Babu’s) job.”
The Gusho is a three-day tournament that ran through Saturday.
