The Demons scored four runs in the bottom of the 10th and beat the Elks 6-5 April 13 in a Southern Lakes Conference softball game at Burlington that demonstrates the progress being made by Elkhorn softball.

The Elks played a SLC game Tuesday at home against Union Grove and play a SLC game today at Wilmot. Wilmot is ranked eighth in Division 1 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association/WisSports.net Coaches Poll.

“It was a great game,” coach Steve Remington said of the Elks’ effort against Burlington. “Our season is just beginning and I am seeing huge steps forward with this young team. We made mistakes, but we kept battling.”

The Elks (1-2, 0-1 SLC) trailed 2-1 in the seventh and were down to their last out when Haley Remington doubled and later scored on a single by Rachel Gosh to tie the score 2-2.

Whitney Salamone hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning and gave the Elks a three-run lead before the Demons (1-1, 1-1 SLC) scored four runs and walked off with the victory.

Remington praised the pitching of freshman Izzy Regner, who threw 9-1/3 innings of what he labeled “fantastic softball.”

“She had nine strikeouts and gave up only four hits,” Remington said. “Her performance is amazing, but not surprising, because of all the hard work she has put in to get herself prepared for the season.”

Regner helped her cause by doubling and scoring a run. Salamone finished with two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Gosh tallied three hits, a run scored and drove in a run and Remington finished with three hits and run scored.

“We will learn more from this loss than we would if we had won,” Steve Remington said. “I am very proud of this team and how they competed.”
