The Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team almost exorcised a demon Jan. 10 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at home against Delavan-Darien.
The Elks led at halftime and missed multiple shots as time expired in a 54-42 loss to the Comets.
Elkhorn played at home last Friday against Badger (5-5, 3-3 SLC) in a SLC game.
Coach Todd Frohwirth said the outing against Delavan-Darien represents the Elks’ best game of the season, and is one of the team’s better efforts of the past two years.
The Elks led the Comets 31-26 at halftime. The Elks led Waukesha North 37-33 Dec. 29 at Fort Atkinson in the Fort Holiday Tournament. The Elks eventually lost 37-33.
Before the game against North, the last time Elkhorn held a halftime lead was Feb. 12, 2016 at home in a SLC game against Westosha Central – the Elks led 24-22 at the break, but lost 47-45.
Elkhorn went winless last season (0-23). The Elks last won a girls basketball game on Feb. 24, 2015. Elkhorn beat Westosha Central 53-49 in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal game at Paddock Lake.
“We played great and made shots,” Frohwirth said. “They were down their best player, but we played very, very well.”
Payton Christensen missed a 3-point field goal as time wound down in regulation. Chloe Erhardt and Ryley Rand also missed shots as time expired.
Christensen led the Elks with 14 points. Olivia May scored eight and Rand, Erhardt and Maddie Ivey each added seven points.
Jaida Speth led the Comets (3-10, 3-4 SLC) with 19 points.
