Streaking Elks prep for SLC tourney

The Elks entered Monday’s Southern Lakes Conference boys high school tennis dual meet Monday at home against Badger on a winning streak.

Elkhorn beat Mukwonago 5-2 May 5 in a non-conference meet at home. The Elks beat Wilmot 6-1 May 3 at Wilmot and Union Grove 7-0 May 2 at home in SLC dual meets.

The Elks start play today in the SLC Varsity Tournament. Matches in the first and second flights of singles and doubles competition are at Waterford. Matches in the third flights of singles and doubles play and the fourth flight of singles play are at Burlington.

Assistant coach Donna Neshek said the Elks played a different lineup against Mukwonago due to illness and family responsibilities.

Elkhorn’s Matt Nelson, at No. 1 singles, beat A.J. Brahm 6-2, 6-0. Colin Passler, at No. 3 singles, defeated Harrison Fabian 6-1, 6-2 and Nick White beat Kevin Johnson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Logan Riese and Carter Olson beat Mukwonago’s Nick Lange and Jeremy Roemer 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and Seth Kirkpatrick and Ian Tuck bet Jake Schneider and Mac Weast 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Caleb Barlow and Nathan Nanda moved up from junior varsity and played at No. 3 doubles for the Elks. The two lost their first 6-3 to Sam Alger and Cullen Karinen and won the second set 6-4 before losing the final set 6-3.

Against Wilmot, Nelson at No. 1, Brant Christensen at No. 2, Passler at No. 3 and White at No. 4 all won singles matches.

Olsen and Riese lost the first set 7-5 to Brandon Zastraw and Alex Tenhagen, and won the second set 6-3 and third set 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Tuck and Kirkpatrick, at No.3 doubles, beat Nolan Souders and Trevor Schwartz 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 1 singles, Nelson lost the first set 6-2 to Union Grove’s Alec Dam in the dual meet against the Broncos before rallying and winning the second set 6-1 and the third set 6-2.

“We made a few changes to the lineup that produced some great combinations at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles,” assistant coach Nancy White said. “Matt Nelson played an outstanding match, showing the drive and ability that he has demonstrated all season.”

Christensen, at No. 2 singles, beat Jacob Genal 6-3 in the first set before losing the second set 6-4. Christensen won the third set 6-0.

White beat Finn Hourigan 6-4 in the first set and lost the second set by the same score before winning the third set 6-3.

Drayke Webster and Joe Korosek, at No. 2 doubles, lost the first set 6-4 before winning the third set 6-1 and the third set 7-5 and beating Josh Allain and Jakob Wendorf.

Tuck and Kirkpatrick beat the Broncos Jaden Wirtz and Michael Bencs 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
