The Elkhorn Area High School girls soccer team learned last week that it can play with anyone in the Southern Lakes Conference.

The Elks beat Union Grove 3-1 May 5 in a SLC match at home and played Burlington to a 2-2 draw in a SLC match May 3 at Burlington.

Elkhorn played Tuesday at Badger (6-5-2, 1-1-1 SLC) and play at home today against Delavan-Darien (4-7-3, 0-3 SLC) in SLC matches. Elkhorn plays Tuesday against Westosha Central (4-5-3, 1-2 SLC) at Paddock Lake in a SLC match.

Coach BZ Kayser said the Elks (11-0-3, 2-0-1 SLC) did not play to their potential against the Broncos (10-2-3, 2-1-0 SLC).

“I was really disappointed after that game,” Kayser said. “The score was 3-1, but we didn’t score these really great goals.”

The Elks led the Broncos 2-1 at halftime on the strength of a goal from Megan Skoczylas and Olivia May. May added another goal in the second half.

May is third in the state in goals and overall scoring. May’s goal tally is at 27. Rowen Kilawee of Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia and Anika Washburn of Brookfield Academy lead the state with 28 goals each.

May’s point total is at 62 through the match versus Burlington (6-2-2, 2-0-1 SLC). Washburn is first (75) and Kilawee is second (64). May has eight assists this season.

The Elks trailed the Demons 2-0 at halftime, and earned praise from their coach for displaying mental toughness and rallying.

“Last year, we weren’t mentally tough enough to do that,” Kayser said. “We didn’t have senior leadership. We’ve got good leadership this season. They bought into it, and they’re mentally tougher.”

Alex Moreno and May scored for the Elks in the second half. Merin Mundt and Sarah Zimmerman scored for the Demons in the first half.

“We actually had an opportunity to steal the game,” Kayser said. “We had a couple of looks before the game ended.”

The Elks are 3-0 against the consensus top three teams in the conference. The Elks beat Waterford 5-0 April 28 at home.

“If you’d told me we’d tie one and win one before we played Waterford and Burlington, I’d have been happy,” Kayser said.
