Elkhorn rallied late against the Packers and pulled out a 4-3 non-conference victory April 22 in a high school softball game at Cudahy.
The Elks’ victory might have eased the sting of being no-hit by the Broncos’ Brittany Moore April 21 in an 11-0 Southern Lakes Conference loss at Union Grove.
The Broncos (6-0, 5-0 SLC) are No. 1 in Division 1 in the latest Wisconsin Softball Coaches Association/WisSports.net state poll.
Elkhorn finished with just one hit in a 13-2 loss April 19 to Burlington (5-2, 3-2 SLC) at home and beat Badger 9-3 April 18 at Badger in SLC games.
The Elks (3-6, 2-3 SLC) played Monday at home against Wilmot (4-5, 2-4 SLC) in a SLC game and faced Westosha Central in a SLC doubleheader Wednesday at Paddock Lake.
Central (9-1, 5-1 SLC) is second in Division 1 in the latest Wisconsin Softball Coaches Association/WisSports.net state poll.
Elkhorn plays Badger (0-7, 0-7 SLC) at home Friday in a SLC contest.
Cudahy (7-5) scored a run in the first and another two in the third and led 3-0. The deficit might have been steeper if not for an inning-ending double play by the Elks.
Rachel Gosh reached base on a walk and started the Elks’ comeback in the sixth inning. Gosh stole second and advanced to third on an infield single from Hailey Wang.
Carolyn Griwsold doubled home Gosh and Wang, and Shawback later singled home Griswold and the score was tied at 3-3.
Emily Brahm led off the seventh inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on an overthrow. Sarah Rychlak sacrificed Brahm to third and Wang drove in Brahm with an RBI single to right field for the eventual winning run.
Griswold pitched the Elks to victory despite chilly conditions and not having her best stuff.
“Carolyn Griswold wasn’t especially sharp in the cold and windy weather but got it done, relying on a very sound Elkhorn defense,” Elks coach Steve Remington said. “She struck out two, walked three and surrendered 10 hits.”
Wang tallied three hits, an RBI and a run scored, and earned praise from Remington for cleanly handling nine chances in the field.
The Elks scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed against Badger.
Griswold threw a complete game on 83 pitches and allowed six hits with five strikeouts. She helped her cause at the plate with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Whitney Salamone also tallied two hits and Anna Bechtel drove in two runs.
