It’s going to be another interesting season for the Elkhorn Area High School boys golf team. Hopefully, interesting does not equal trying.
Dayne Fisher is the lone senior expected to make a significant contribution to the Elks’ fortunes this season. Elkhorn is going to field a young squad, and might suffer some growing pains.
“We have a very young team, mostly freshmen and sophomores,” coach Steve Fisher said. “As a result, many of the boys will have a chance to earn valuable experience.”
The Elks open the 2016 season April 9 in the Elk Invite at Evergreen Country Club. Evergreen is the Elks’ home course.
Elkhorn opens Southern Lakes Conference competition April 19 with a SLC Major at Ives Grove Golf Course in Sturtevant. All teams in the SLC compete in the Major format.
The now-graduated Troy Steinfest shot an 89 and finished 17th to lead the Elks to a seventh-place finish last season on May 19 at the Southern Lakes Conference tournament at Evergreen Golf Club.
The Elks finished with a four-man team score of 375 strokes over 18 holes. Badger finished first and won the Southern Lakes Conference title with a score of 332.
The Elks’ 2015 season ended June 2 at The Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove in a WIAA Division 1 sectional tournament when Steinfest fell short of a berth in the State Boys Golf Tournament.
Steinfest finished 22nd overall with an 18-hole score of 84 on the par 71 course. Sun Prairie hosted the sectional meet.
The top two teams and the top three individuals who do not play for one of the top two teams advance from the sectional. The WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament was contested Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.
Dayne Fisher will likely be joined on varsity this season by sophomores Liam Ahler and Kyle Schoenberg. Ahler and Schoeneberg shared the Elks’ Most Promising award for their play last season.
Steve Fisher said junior Kyle Strait and sophomores Steven Gee, Ty Garlock and Cory Loveless might also contribute. Fisher said freshmen Nolan Shirk and Nick Keller could also help out.
Steve Fisher said Badger is again the SLC favorite.
